Reefer Sanity: Fact and Fiction About Marijuana

A conversation with SAM's Dr. Kevin Sabet and Will Jones

Join us as drug policy experts and colleagues Dr. Kevin Sabet and Will Jones share their compelling argument about the costs of marijuana legalization. Rather than criminalize or legalize marijuana, they contend that a smart approach to policy is required, one based on science, public health, and public safety instead of fear and rhetoric.

Dr. Sabet and Mr. Jones will discuss:

– The devastating negative health effects of marijuana
– How legalization exacerbates social inequalities and fails to address matters of social justice
– How the promised economic benefits of marijuana commercialization are bypassing black communities

Author, consultant, advisor to three U.S. presidential administrations, and assistant professor, Kevin Sabet, Ph.D., has studied, researched, written about, and implemented drug policy for more than 20 years. He is currently the President and CEO of SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana), a non-profit organization he founded with Congressman Patrick Kennedy and David Frum. His book, Reefer Sanity: Seven Great Myths About Marijuana, was published by Beaufort (Midpoint) in 2013 and was released in its second edition at the end of 2017. He is also the co-editor of Marijuana and Contemporary Health, published by Oxford University Press, and an assistant adjunct professor at Yale University, and an institute director at the University of Florida.

Will Jones serves as Communications and Outreach Associate at SAM. He is an experienced speaker and community activist working on issues of social justice at the local and national level. Partnering with national drug policy advisors and leaders around Washington, D.C., in 2014 Jones founded Two Is Enough DC to raise awareness of the predatory marijuana commercial industry which disproportionally targets disenfranchised communities.
